Mood: The High-Angle Candid |
![]() |
| OVERVIEW |
| It's easy to overlook photographs of events and people you see each day on a familiar street ---everything looks so ordinary. You need a fresh eye and new visual ingredients. Discover the high-angle point of view. The high perspective changes everything. Building lines and alleys form striking patterns. At a distance you can't see people's expressions, only the forms of their bodies. From a high angle, the graphic elements of shape, line, light, and shadow combine in a unique way to create a special mood, a sense of space, even a feeling of loneliness. |
| CREATIVE HINTS |
| For those of you who are
shy about getting close to people with a camera, the high-angle approach
is a good introduction to the candid style of photography. Here, you're
not interested in capturing close-up candid expression, but in photographing
a high-angle scene at just the right moment when all the elements of
the composition fit together spontaneously. The resulting image should
project a mood or tell a story. Whenever you find a good balcony or
apartment viewpoint, return during the day (and under different weather
conditions) to evaluate the light and choose the ideal shooting time.
Test compose the scene in advance, trying different lenses such as the
normal, wide-angle, telephoto, or zoom. Even spend some time just observing
the action below to see what types of situations interest you. Then
prepare the camera and wait for the picture to happen.
